This event took place within the framework of the Bioarchaeology Lab - Archaeological Sciences of the Austrian Archaeological Institute at the Austrian Academy of Scicences.

The Bioarchaeology lab is coordinated by Andreas G. Heiss and Alfred Galik and the workshop was organised by Caroline Partiot (ÖAI/ÖAW, Vienna) and Estella Weiss-Krejci (University of Heidelberg, ÖAI/ÖAW, Vienna).

This workshop, for which Dr. Henri Duday (CNRS UMR 5199 Pacea) and Pr. Christopher Knüsel (Université de Bordeaux, CNRS UMR 5199 Pacea) were keynote speakers, aimed to review the circumstances of the emergence and development of Archaeothanatology in recent decades in France and abroad. This event examined the various methodological and conceptual aspects of Archaeothanatology, as well as the new perspectives opened up by the development of new methods such as 3D recording.

It brought together around 90 attendees in person and online, with 16 podium presentations and 24 speakers. A public lecture by Dr Henri Duday was organized in collaboration with the Institut Français de Vienne, with 80 attendees.

Dr. Henri Duday and Pr. Christopher C.J. Knüsel led a bilingual practical session, which aimed to provide an initial overview of archaeothanatological analysis using photographs and was both an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Dr. Andreas Heiss gave a tour of the facilities of the Austrian Archaeological institute, newly relocated to the Postsparkasse.

The event ended with a tour of the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, led by Dr. Margit Berner.
